Doreen N. Onwong’a has more than 10 years of experience in legal practice. Her areas of expertise are capital markets, corporate and project finance, and real estate. She exhibits a demonstrable aptitude in capital market transactions, project finance and general corporate commercial law.
BIOGRAPHY
Doreen has more than 10 years of experience in legal practice. She exhibits a demonstrable aptitude in capital markets, corporate and commercial law and project finance. Doreen has acted as lead legal advisor on some of the largest capital markets transactions in the country. These include the KES 100 billion initial public offer of Kenya Pipeline Company, the first IPO in 17 years and one of the largest in East Africa; the KES 44.5 billion Talanta Infrastructure Asset Backed Security, the first Sukuk issued in Kenya to finance a public private partnership project; and the 2020 Centum Real Estate Zero Coupon Bond. In addition, Doreen regularly advises on the structuring of private debt and equity issuances.
In the real estate sector, Doreen, as team leader, has delivered complex real estate development projects, both in commercial and residential real estate, valued at billions of shillings and has shown expertise in product development involving capital market products and services. She was lead counsel in the establishment of GenAfrica’s Property Fund, a real estate private equity fund approved by the CMA, and has worked with a number of local fund managers in the structuring and establishment of collective investment schemes and providing legal advisory for the purposes of supporting key investment decisions. Doreen is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL. B) from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. She is also an award-winning Certified Secretary and an accredited Governance Auditor. As a Certified Secretary, Doreen has served as the Company Secretary of a blue chip listed company in the financial services where she played a critical role in enhancing and streamlining the company’s corporate governance practices.
